What is carbon footprint and how can i trace my own?

Filed Under carbon footprint | 2 Comments

I was wondering what carbon footprint was because i have to do a lba on it by tracing my own carbon footprints. What is it and how can I trace my own?

Your carbon footprint is a “measure of the impact human activities have on the environment in terms of the amount of greenhouse gases produced, measured in units of carbon dioxide” (quoting from wikipedia).

There are a number of sites available which allow you to calculate your footprint to a greaster or lesser amount of detail (based on things like your travel, central heating, etc.). Below is an example.

Reducing Our Carbon Footprint: A Low-Energy House

Filed Under carbon footprint | Leave a Comment

How well can we assess and improve building energy performance in California homes? How much energy—and carbon—do homes use in other parts of the world? Rick Diamond, deputy group leader of the Berkeley Lab Energy Performance of Buildings Group, discusses change, global solutions, and the stories of three houses in Berkeley, Kabul (Afghanistan), and Washington, D.C. Diamond, who is also a senior advisor at the California Institute for Energy and Environment, investigates user interactions with the built environment for improved building energy performance. The group has studied a wide range of issues related to energy use in housing, including duct system efficiency, user behavior, and infiltration and ventilation measurements. His talk was presented September 17, 2007.

Can somebody tell me about green house gases?

Filed Under green house gases | 3 Comments

I have to write a science essay on them but I dont know much about them, do NOT copy paste from wikipedia.

The main gases that cause the greenhouse effect are water vapor, carbon dioxide (CO2), and methane, which come naturally, mainly from animal manure. Other gases like nitrogen oxide and chlorofluorocarbons; man made gases, get caught in the atmosphere as well, also the decay of animals and respiration are two main natural sources of carbon dioxide. In my opinion, the people of the world should try to slow down the emission of man maid greenhouse gases and find ways to restore the natural balance so the climate does not change in an unnatural way. If we fail to do this, we will be forced to adapt to a new and uncertain climate. If we had an international cooperation to put a damper on the production of chlorofluorocarbons and slowed down the use of fossil fuels it would dramatically slow done the process of global warming.
Carbon dioxide pollution from the increase of industry and transportation is a major cause of global warming. These two causes are connected with the growth in the world population. As the population grows the necessity for food and other products increase, therefore industry must grow to keep up with the demand. The increase in transportation is directly due to the growing population and the need for jobs and the growing congestion on our highways.

Another cause in global warming is deforestation. Trees remove carbon dioxide from the air as they grow. The carbon dioxide is released back into the air as they are cut and burned. The forest ability to reduce the carbon dioxide from the atmosphere is decreasing rapidly due to massive deforestation of worlds rain forests. These causes are fixable, but if they are not fixed, the Earth and its inhabitants will become victims of global warming.

Over the last hundred years, the global temperatures have been increasing slowly, but steadily. Since 1980, the average global temperature has risen 0.2 degrees Celsius (0.4 degrees Fahrenheit) each decade. Scientist predict that if we continue putting the same amount of green house gases into the atmosphere, that by the year 2030 the temperature will be rising as much as 0.5 degrees C (0.9 degrees Fahrenheit) or more per decade. Overall, the global temperature could rise anywhere from 5 to 9 degrees over the next fifty years. If the temperatures do rise, as predicted, several things could happen. The increase of temperature could alter the growth of crops in areas near the equator due to insufficient rain and heat. The loss of the ability to grow crops would inflict serious economic damages to unindustrialized, third world countries that rely on agriculture as a major source income. With the high temperatures polar ice caps would melt and cause the sea level rise 1 to 3 feet. This would destroy small islands, coastal cities and some shallow rivers. The Florida Everglades, and costal cities, such as New York City and Miami would be destroyed.

I believe global warming is a big threat to our nation and the world. If we do not act now, it may be too late. Although there is no sure way of telling what the climate will be like in the future we must take steps to ensure the health of the Earth. If you look at what is happening to this world, and you will see that there is a pollution problem. There are steps being taken to reduce the amount of green house gases put into the air, but it still is not enough, we need to do more to reduce global warming, if we don't future generations will suffer the effects of global warming.

How do we decrease the amount of green house gases?

Filed Under green house gases | 3 Comments

How do we decrease the amount of carbon, nitrogen, methane, and hydrofluocarbons?
How can normal people decrease thease things like riding a bike, recycling, ect.

The two biggies are CO2 (carbon dioxide) and H20 (water vapor) reducing activities that produce these in excess will reduce green house effect. Burning fossil fuels is probably the most politically discussed

is it possible to create environment on the mars by super green house gases, what mars has the magnetic field?

Filed Under green house gases | 1 Comment

i heard that we can from a environment on mars to make it life full is it possible to create environment there by super green house gases, and what mars has the magnetic field like earth to stop the solar wind by entering in to the mars atmosphere so that it wont take the gases out of the mars magnetic field

mars' magnetic field is very weak and likely due to magnetised crust rather than an internal dynamo. it doesn't really put a dent in the solar wind. however if gases could be added to mars' atmosphere sufficient to create a habitable environment in a "short" timeframe of a few hundred years, it would seem to be little additional problem to keep adding gases from whatever source to "top up" losses due to solar wind.

Why are the green house gases concentration changing?

Filed Under green house gases | 2 Comments

change of Green house gas?

Probably, it's because more ( or less) of a certain type of greenhouse gas is produced, as compared to others. an increase or decrease in one or more of the greenhouses gases can be attributed to the fact that current methods have been modified to either reduce or increase the production level.

If we stopped everyone smoking in the world how much would green house gases be cut?

Filed Under green house gases | 3 Comments

We all have to stop green house gases because of the environment. Smoking obviously gives off carbon monoxide fumes sto psmoking stop these gases. Would we still need to cut down on carand aeroplane use?

Well, there are lots of things that contribute to harmful gases building up in the atmosphere. If everyone quit smoking, the levels of these gases may not decrease significantly, however, it would benefit everyone's health and decrease instances of lung cancer, and house fires.

What kind of costs will be associated with starting my own business, selling ecofriendly bags on the internet?

Filed Under ecofriendly | 3 Comments

For a project i have to come up with rent costs, utility costs, labor costs in general, costs taht have to do with starting a business…
But i dont know the costs involved( fixed and variable) and what kind of people i wold have to hire and how much to pay them??

Break it down in various components:

Producing/Manufacturing the bag

- cost of designing the bag: include the designer fees, prototype creation, market testing
- materials in creating the bag
- will the bag be manufactured in the US or outsourced to China?
- if outsourced to other country, compute the cost of communication, whether you have to go to the country to inspect production, etc

Selling on the Internet

- website design including graphic artists and web programmer
- web copy writer
- website hosting
- merchant account for accepting credit card payments
- payment gateway such as Authorize.net
- SSL certificates such as Verisign or Thawte
- shopping cart system
- cost of customer care, if any
- cost of packaging
- cost of shipping
- inventory control
- employees, if any: who will maintain website
- internet marketing expert or search engine expert
- advertising and marketing costs
- logo design
- banners design
- product photography (whether you outsource this or in house)
- warehousing/storage costs, if needed

Why woud being a vegan help to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases more than converting to an ecofriendly car

Filed Under ecofriendly | 3 Comments

" A vegan uses no animal products. It is possible that each of us could make a bigger contribution to reducing emissions of greenhouse gases by becoming a vegan than by converting to an eco-friendly car."
What is your response to this statement?

i need different opinions please! thank you, xxx
any help is appreciated! thanks, xxx

I heard about this too, and I guess it does make a little bit of sense.
First off, if more people ate less meat, than less cows and other animals would be eaten, which would lessen the amount of GRAINS needed to be grown to feed the animals, and also, there would be less animal FECES that they would have to dispose of. So right off the bat we would be saving precious grains and saving ALOT of poop. Plus, Eating less meat would mean less farting, and farting itself releases methane gas which is harmful to the environment.
This is just a very very vague answer to your question, I am sure there are lots more to it but this is a starting point.

Dandelions? I think I already know the answer, but does anyone know of any ecofriendly tips for killing them?

Filed Under ecofriendly | 4 Comments

I've been digging them out 'til my back hurts……and the next day the yard will be covered with a new crop of blooms. I really
don't like using harsh chemicals but wouldn't be above trying something less draconian……that wouldn't kill surrounding grass, if there is such a miracle out there, which I doubt. But you never know; Y!Answers has surprised me before!

There is a tool called a weed puller. This you push into the core of the weed then it has a way to close it up so it grasps the root and then you pull it up. This is the best way to get rid of Dandelions.
